WORLD CUP

Everyone loves the excitement and sportsmanship of the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games! Reading this morning about the Praireland sentencing of peaceful anti-ICE protesters to between 30-100 years in prison for being part of a “North Texas Antifa cell” only makes…

IT’S WHAT HE WOULD HAVE WANTED

There is little doubt that Jeffrey Epstein was, at the very least, an Israeli intelligence asset who collected ‘kompromat’ on powerful figures. The files show his close relationships with the Israeli political and military elite, how a senior Israeli intelligence officer stayed at Epstein’s place on multiple occasions between 2013 and 2016, how the Israeli government installed security equipment and controlled access to a Manhattan apartment building where Epstein housed underage girls. They show Epstein’s funding of Israeli groups, including ‘Friends of the IDF’, the settler org the Jewish National Fund, as well as his ties to members of Israel’s overseas intelligence services. And FBI sources in the files claim he was an Israeli spy, just like his lawyer.

NEW TORY FLAVOUR

I’ve been meaning to update this poster for a while to include the “NEW” Tory option available to voters. Particularly in the context of the Gorton and Denton by-election, which has proven just how much Labour and much of the UK’s political and media establishment would rather see the barely-disguised fascists of Reform win political power, than allow the Greens, or any other left wing alternative succeed in driving back the rise of the far-right in the UK.

THEFT IS LEGAL

AI corporations are putting all their chips on railroading legislators around the world to prevent regulation of the industry long enough so they can figure out a way of making their businesses profitable, no matter what the cost to culture, society, the planet, or even to the precious economy they claim to love. Unfortunately most leaders are easily bamboozled about new technology and the utopian claims of tech-fantasist snake oil salesmen like Sam Altman and Elon Musk. OpenAI is not going to create a super intelligent god on earth, it’s going to basically make a new version of Google, another fucking advertising platform, and they’re going to destroy the internet and human culture in order to do so. As a proposition that doesn’t sound worth it, but if you frame it as an inevitable fourth industrial revolution that will solve every problem from cancer to global warming and provide unlimited amounts of everything you could ever want, then politicians start to lap it up.

BP: BEYOND PARODY

Painted a quick one today after hearing BP are walking back their already water-thin commitments to renewable energy and investing billions more in getting as much oil and gas out of the ground as they can in order to set fire to your grandchildren. In 2000 BP rebranded itself from British Petroleum to “Beyond Petroleum” in an early attempt at obvious greenwashing. It also popularised the concept of the Personal Carbon Footprint with a $250 million ad campaign in 2003, just before the Iraq war opened up billions of dollars worth of oil reserves for BP and other US/UK oil companies to loot.

THE NATIONAL CREDIT CARD

"Any woman who understands the problems of running a home will be nearer to understanding the problems of running a country." – Margaret Thatcher Rachel Reeves explains how to run your household budget in today’s Sun. It feels like every chancellor and prime minister in living memory has presented some version of this completely inaccurate and misleading comparison between balancing a household budget and running a national economy, and its never met with the derision it deserves by the media. On the contrary it is presented as sound, logical and relatable, despite being demonstratably wrong. As Avery Edison said on Twitter, “even pretending to believe these are relevant experiences should actually be disqualifying.” Anyone in government who refers to the “national credit card” being “maxed out” should, by law, either have to resign or take a compulsory economics course. I’ve been thinking about doing a sequel to the Mini Daily Mail for a while and I think this might be the start of it. I already have the front page ready to go. "If you have maxed out your credit card, if you put off dealing with the problem, the problem gets worse.” – David Cameron

SOCIALISM OR BARBARISM

This week the Labour government have been trailing their plans to continue the Tories war on the sick and disabled by restricting disability benefits (known as Personal Independence Payments (PIP)) and increasing the state and social harassment of those who need them. This comes after Rachel Reeves scrapped plans to close the tax loopholes on the super-rich who spend their time abroad for tax reasons after “after listening to the concerns that have been raised by the non-dom community” (genuine quote!) We never really left, but we’re back to the cruelty of austerity, blaming and punishing the people least responsible for the state of the country while defending the interests of those who have been looting it with glee through the last 45 years of Thatcherite cross-party consensus. As part of this push for “growth” Starmer and Reeves have also announced their plan to slash “unnecessary regulation and red tape”, as if Grenfell never happened, allowing building developers free-reign to fire up more shoddy, unsafe death-traps that will fall to pieces in a decade or two if they don’t burn down before then. And don’t forget the slashing of pensioner’s winter-fuel payments so that the cold weather could help reduce the nation’s pension bill yet further. All this from a government stacked to the hilt with self-interested neoliberals who always have one-eye on the plush privatised utilities director job they’ll land once they leave office, after handing over the country to a Reform government led by Nigel Farage (who now leads in the polls for the first time). The question has always been socialism or barbarism. But this Labour government is so allergic to any hint of socialism, it has decided that, for the rest of us, barbarism will have to suffice.

COCA-COLA

First new work of the year in support of the ongoing BDS boycott of Coca Cola products, and in recognition also of Coca-Cola’s murderous repression of union organisers in South America. In 2017, Coca Cola donated $14000 to the extremist Israeli far-right organisation Im Tirtzu, which aims to “promote Zionism” by attacking and delegitimising Israeli left-wing and human rights groups and individuals. Coke also operates facilities in Atarot, an illegal Israeli settlement in the West Bank. Coca-Cola has been accused of having union organisers murdered in several countries. In Guatemala City, while workers at a company bottling planet fought for their jobs, including occupying the plant for 13 months, three General Secretaries of their union were murdered and five other workers killed. Four more were kidnapped and have disappeared. Torture and intimidation were also used against union members. Coke also had at least a dozen union organisers killed in Colombia.

ARTIFICIAL AI

The Mechanical Turk was a machine built in 1770, at the start of the Industrial Revolution, that supposedly beat Napoleon and Benjamin Franklin at chess. It toured for 84 years before being destroyed in a fire and, although many suspected it was a scam, it was only revealed to have been a hoax as late as 1834. It seems obvious now, but it was essentially a box with a person inside. Today, we call this the AI revolution. AI is one of the most hyped technologies of my lifetime, and yet its real-world results either don’t work, are inaccurate, annoying, and/or thoroughly depressing. Supposedly fully-automated AI-tech is frequently revealed to be no more than thousands of low-paid workers in a trench coat.

LITTLE AMERICA

Beyond US military and economic support for Israel as its imperial outpost in the region, an estimated 160,000 Americans live in illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and are some of the most active participants in the ongoing campaign of terror against the indigenous Palestinian population. Israeli settler terrorism as a movement also draws inspiration from two Americans infamous as the godfathers of the campaign of settler violence against ordinary Palestinians.

KEYBOARD GUIDE (PC)

In 2015 I made a keyboard guide to help people find the keys on their muddled-up keyboards. At the time I used Apple computers myself so without really thinking too much I made it as an Apple keyboard, however a few people complained that as PC users this diagram was confusing and bewildering to them. Now, almost ten years later I am releasing an updated PC version. You can order it here.

AMERICA FIRST?

I’m fascinated by the idea of how the US/Israel relationship will be talked about historically in another 100 years or so (if we make it that far). You have what is for all intents and purposes, a US imperial colony in the Middle East. It serves US geopolitical and military interests in the region. They are the closest of allies. But Israel also has more spies in the US government and military than any other nation, it spends millions on interfering in US elections to push pro-Israel politicians who will back Israel no matter what the cost to their country or their party, Israel has even militarily attacked US forces in the region (USS Liberty) and murdered US citizens in Palestine without consequence.

THE HISTORY OF FUCKING

I made a timeline charting the invention of fucking. Partly based this on the organism Microbrachius Dicki which I read was the first-known animal to stop reproducing by spawning and instead mate by fucking. To be 100% accurate though the graph should mention that after the Dicki died out fucking also stopped for a few million years before being brought back by the ancestors of sharks and rays. And this was the article I read that in, also fun fact: In the article there’s also a cute little diagram of them holding hands while they do it: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-29661446

MAKE THE DESERT BLOOM

The Zionist myth that Israeli settlers “made the desert bloom” is as inaccurate as the one that Israel was a “land without a people for a people without a land”. As we can see in Gaza and the West Bank, the process of stripping the land of its people, and reducing cultivated land to slashed and burned wasteland, requires extensive, brutal violence. Olive groves that have been propagated for centuries are torn down by Israeli settlers, water sources are filled with concrete, and farmers are driven from their homes. In the 1948 Nakba, at least half of the Arab population of Palestine, (700,000 people,) were driven from their homes, and forbidden from returning. Villages were razed, and archaeological sites destroyed. There has been a deliberate attempt by the Israeli state to make its claim of a “land without a people” a retrospective reality. As they will attempt to do with Gaza, after this Second Nakba. According to Decolonizing Palestine: “The vast majority of cultivated agricultural land in Israel today was already being cultivated by Palestinians before their ethnic cleansing… On the eve of the 1948 war, around 739,750 acres of land were being cultivated by Palestinians. These cultivated lands were so vast, that they were “greater than the physical area which was under cultivation in Israel almost thirty years later.” The agricultural core of the Israeli state consists of cultivated farmland that was stolen from Palestinian refugees after their ethnic cleansing.” Colonial ideology has always needed to believe that conquered peoples were idle, ignorant and backwards, unable to manage their own resources, and always requiring Western intervention to improve and utilize the land beneath their feet. The more we learn about the civilisations that European colonialism has destroyed, the more we discover that we were simply importing our own ignorance […]

THIS IS ISRAEL

100,000 people killed, injured, or missing In Gaza (January 2024) “There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people.” – Howard Zinn Colonisation and genocide go hand in hand. It’s impossible to read about European colonialism and not see the parallels with the Israeli state and how it acts towards the supposedly ‘barbaric’ people it has colonised. Not least in the way the coloniser regards itself as a shining beacon of civilisation on a dark continent, even while it unleashes incredible violence against defenceless civilians. The destruction of farms and wells, forced deportations, indigenous people as second-class citizens in their own land. There is nothing really new here except the technology of murder. This is Empire, red in tooth and claw. When European and North American nations cannot see genocide happening in Palestine, it’s because they are unable to see it in their own story either. If what Israel is doing is genocidal, then maybe what we did was too? Maybe we’d have to stop pretending that it was only a handful of enemy regimes that engaged in genocidal policies against ‘undesirable’ peoples. And then we’d have to stop skipping those pages of the history we tell ourselves.

NEVER AGAIN*

Never again means just that. No nation or people gets a free pass to carry it out. There are no extenuating circumstances that excuse it. There is no “but…”. Never again means never again for anybody. Germany’s support at the ICJ for Israel’s genocidal war against the people of Gaza shows that they haven’t really learned anything from their own history of genocide. The way history is told makes the Nazis seem like an aberration in German and European history, but fascism and European colonialism are intrinsically linked. Nazi eugenics carried on the lineage of colonial “scientific racism” that had been used to justify slavery; Before concentration camps came to Europe, they were first brought to South Africa by the British, to Cuba by the Spanish, and to the Philippines by the US. As Aime Cesaire argued, fascism is colonial violence and subjugation, brought home. The Nazi “Brown Shirts” were even named after the surplus colonial Schutztruppe uniforms from Germany’s defunct African empire. Germany colonised Namibia from 1884 and aimed to create a predominantley white “new African Germany” where the native populations would be put onto reservations and their land distributed among settlers and companies. The nomadic Herero and Nama people in Namibia were brutally oppressed, forced off their land and into slave labour by the settlers. In 1904 the Herero rose up and killed up to 150 Germans. The German response killed between 70-90,000 indigenous people, with survivors placed in concentration camps were they were tortured, starved, enslaved, and had medical experiments performed on them. This was the first genocide of the 20th Century. Germany is (mostly) contrite about the Holocaust, but less forthcoming in remorse or condemnation for their other genocides. It’s almost like they can’t see a genocide unless the perpetrators are […]

VIOLENCE

My first painting of 2024. This was inspired by the double-standard around violence, not just in Israel’s occupation and destruction of Palestine, but also in the ‘monopoly of violence’ that is held by states, police, militaries, and intelligence agencies, which allows politicians and commentators to claim that “violence is never the answer” when referring to a regular person defending themselves against a police attack, punching a Nazi in the street, or pushing a cream pie into a politician or CEO’s face; but which also allows them to not flinch at the application of unimaginable levels of cruel, and even sadistic, violence as long as the people inflicting that violence wear the correct uniform. The threshold for what constitutes violence is also far lower when the charge is levelled at the general public, rather than those with power. After the overturning of Roe V Wade by the US Supreme Court, when pro-choice activists were peacefully protesting outside the homes of judges, President Biden said “No intimidation. Violence is never acceptable. Threats and intimidation are not speech. We must stand against violence in any form regardless of your rationale.” Implying that a protest was intimidation, and that intimidation was a form of violence. A quote of “Violence is never acceptable” from the commander in chief of the most powerful military in the history of the world, and a nation that has been at war for all but eighteen of its 247-year existence, also comes preloaded with its own punchline. This tweet from Aaron Bady on twitter has stayed with me, “The basic (colonial) double standard of the Israel Palestine “conflict” is that any Palestinian violence justifies any Israeli violence, but no Israeli violence ever justifies any Palestinian violence, and once you see it, you’ll never stop seeing it.” He continued, “(personally, I […]

NEVER NEED THE TOILET TOO

Been getting requests for a new colourway of my sold out “Never Need the Toilet” print which has inexplicably been one of the most popular editions I’ve made so far. So I’m releasing this new edition on my website shop. I’ve switched the red and yellow and added in a second nipple which was missing from the original illustration. One of my favourite reactions to this image was when someone asked “I’ve been laughing about this for a few weeks now, can you tell me why it’s funny?”

JUST STOP OIL AT THE SNOOKER

A quick one I painted today inspired by yesterday’s Just Stop Oil demonstration at the snooker. Something worth considering for the armchair strategists who disapprove of these tactics: look up the tactics of the Suffragettes. Not just when they chained themselves to railings and jumped in front of a racehorse, I mean all the tactics. Look at how they burned down churches, poured ink into post boxes, fought police in the streets, set fire to moving trains and interfered with rail signals to try and cause crashes, threw an axe at the prime minister. Ask yourself if you would have supported the Suffragettes *at the time*, rather than from the comfort of the present where we can rest assured the campaign was just & effective. I would have even struggled with it, as I have with some climate actions. But on balance, the scale of the injustice at hand requires interventions that disrupt normal life. How can you have a normal society when half the population are denied human rights? How can you have a normal society that runs on fuels that will end organised human life on earth?

DEMOCRACY

I love democracy me. All those years of urgent screeching by centrists and liberals about being ‘politically homeless’ and they finally got what they wanted, the left crushed out of political life, and all three major parties offering nothing more than moderately different flavours of the exact the same thing: neoliberalism, crackdowns, more cops, fewer nurses, ongoing-austerity and constant boot-licked fealty to the worst and cruellest opinions bellowed out daily by the Mail and Sun. But this is, at the heart of it, what neoliberalism and the post-WW2 ‘Washington Consensus’ is about. Defanging democracy, removing the big questions from the public altogether. No ideology except the dominant ideology. The plebs can’t vote for the wrong thing if it’s never allowed on the ballot. That’s a big part of the reason Brexit was such a shock and why so many people voted against their own best interests because, outside of Scotland and N.Ireland, we hadn’t been offered a decision that could actually really change anything for decades. I know a few people, like my Dad, who voted Leave precisely because of that, because fuck every living prime minister who all lined up telling him to vote Remain. It’s hard not to sympathise with that sentiment. It’s also grim to think where we might end up down the line if the centrist plan to make sure that politics stays like this forever pans out. They can try and hold the gas in, but there will be burps, like Brexit, that shake the foundations of society and maybe bring the entire thing down on top of us. So thanks to politics getting back to normal you can have your Tory party with added lemon or with no added sugar, but whatever you choose, or don’t choose, you’re still getting 2 litres of carbonated […]

MANAGED DEMOCRACY

Managed democracy, brought to you by neoliberalism. One of the primary functions of neoliberalism is to remove economic policy from the democratic sphere, so it’s no longer possible to vote for anything except neoliberal economic policy. This, now we are faced with a choice between Starmer & Sunak, is “the triumph of centrism” according to George Osborne. A triumph because all other options are defeated and removed from voter reach. Both major parties in the UK agree on the fundamentals of how to run the economy, (privatisation & outsourcing, austerity, marketisation, anti-union legislation etc.), they just disagree on some smaller points of detail such as which party’s donors should get the lucrative NHS contracts.
