GOOGLE AND THE GENOCIDE

In 2021 Google signed a $1.2 billion cloud computing contract with the Israeli government, Project Nimbus. In 2024 they sacked 50 employees for protesting the contract over concerns company technology was being used to target Palestinians for murder by the…

US EMPIRE

It’s taken ages but I think I’ve finally finished this map of US empire, charting US military and CIA foreign interventions since 1900, as well as US military bases and CIA torture black sites.
THIS IS ISRAEL

100,000 people killed, injured, or missing In Gaza (January 2024) “There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people.” – Howard Zinn Colonisation and genocide go hand in hand. It’s impossible to read about European colonialism and not see the parallels with the Israeli state and how it acts towards the supposedly ‘barbaric’ people it has colonised. Not least in the way the coloniser regards itself as a shining beacon of civilisation on a dark continent, even while it unleashes incredible violence against defenceless civilians. The destruction of farms and wells, forced deportations, indigenous people as second-class citizens in their own land. There is nothing really new here except the technology of murder. This is Empire, red in tooth and claw. When European and North American nations cannot see genocide happening in Palestine, it’s because they are unable to see it in their own story either. If what Israel is doing is genocidal, then maybe what we did was too? Maybe we’d have to stop pretending that it was only a handful of enemy regimes that engaged in genocidal policies against ‘undesirable’ peoples. And then we’d have to stop skipping those pages of the history we tell ourselves.
NEVER AGAIN*

Never again means just that. No nation or people gets a free pass to carry it out. There are no extenuating circumstances that excuse it. There is no “but…”. Never again means never again for anybody. Germany’s support at the ICJ for Israel’s genocidal war against the people of Gaza shows that they haven’t really learned anything from their own history of genocide. The way history is told makes the Nazis seem like an aberration in German and European history, but fascism and European colonialism are intrinsically linked. Nazi eugenics carried on the lineage of colonial “scientific racism” that had been used to justify slavery; Before concentration camps came to Europe, they were first brought to South Africa by the British, to Cuba by the Spanish, and to the Philippines by the US. As Aime Cesaire argued, fascism is colonial violence and subjugation, brought home. The Nazi “Brown Shirts” were even named after the surplus colonial Schutztruppe uniforms from Germany’s defunct African empire. Germany colonised Namibia from 1884 and aimed to create a predominantley white “new African Germany” where the native populations would be put onto reservations and their land distributed among settlers and companies. The nomadic Herero and Nama people in Namibia were brutally oppressed, forced off their land and into slave labour by the settlers. In 1904 the Herero rose up and killed up to 150 Germans. The German response killed between 70-90,000 indigenous people, with survivors placed in concentration camps were they were tortured, starved, enslaved, and had medical experiments performed on them. This was the first genocide of the 20th Century. Germany is (mostly) contrite about the Holocaust, but less forthcoming in remorse or condemnation for their other genocides. It’s almost like they can’t see a genocide unless the perpetrators are […]
VIOLENCE

My first painting of 2024. This was inspired by the double-standard around violence, not just in Israel’s occupation and destruction of Palestine, but also in the ‘monopoly of violence’ that is held by states, police, militaries, and intelligence agencies, which allows politicians and commentators to claim that “violence is never the answer” when referring to a regular person defending themselves against a police attack, punching a Nazi in the street, or pushing a cream pie into a politician or CEO’s face; but which also allows them to not flinch at the application of unimaginable levels of cruel, and even sadistic, violence as long as the people inflicting that violence wear the correct uniform. The threshold for what constitutes violence is also far lower when the charge is levelled at the general public, rather than those with power. After the overturning of Roe V Wade by the US Supreme Court, when pro-choice activists were peacefully protesting outside the homes of judges, President Biden said “No intimidation. Violence is never acceptable. Threats and intimidation are not speech. We must stand against violence in any form regardless of your rationale.” Implying that a protest was intimidation, and that intimidation was a form of violence. A quote of “Violence is never acceptable” from the commander in chief of the most powerful military in the history of the world, and a nation that has been at war for all but eighteen of its 247-year existence, also comes preloaded with its own punchline. This tweet from Aaron Bady on twitter has stayed with me, “The basic (colonial) double standard of the Israel Palestine “conflict” is that any Palestinian violence justifies any Israeli violence, but no Israeli violence ever justifies any Palestinian violence, and once you see it, you’ll never stop seeing it.” He continued, “(personally, I […]
HELL IN THE NIGER DELTA – DOCUMENTARY

I put together a short documentary about my visit to Nigeria for the first Niger Delta climate change conference organised by Lekeh Development Foundation (LEDEF). See my previous post about the trip here. One of the most polluted areas on the planet, the Niger Delta has a life expectancy of just 41 years due to decades of Shell oil spills & constant gas flaring. As part of the conference we visited two Shell oil spill sites in Eleme and K-Dere, Ogoniland, to see first hand some of the horrors that Shell has unleashed on this part of the world for over 65 years. The Eleme spill occurred in June 2023, K-Dere was in 2020, and is still untreated as of August 2023.

HSBC

I designed this poster as part of Brandalism’s new subvertising campaign targeting HSBC’s risible claims to be an ethical bank while investing in fossil fuels, arms companies, and laundering money for the world’s worst criminals. See below for more readable poster text. My design went up in Leeds, Sheffield and on the London underground but there’s a load of great posters by different artists in the campaign. Across 10 UK cities activists took over 250 billboards and bus stops with satirical HSBC ads. Thanks to everyone who installed work for this! More about the takeover and other posters in the campaign here: brandalism.ch/projects/hsbc/ More of my subvertising work here: www.spellingmistakescostlives.com/subvertising Poster text: “They call it crime. We call it business. For a bank that was founded to finance the illegal opium trade, we’ve certainly stayed true to our roots. We laundered hundreds of millions of pounds for the world’s largest and most violent drug cartels, moved money across borders for everyone from Al-Qaeda to ISIS, and helped countries like Iran, Sudan and North Korea bypass UN sanctions. Whether you need help evading taxes, laundering your drug profits, selling weapons to brutal dictators, or funding investment in the fossil fuels that will exterminate life on Earth, give us a call. HSBC The world’s criminal bank.”
RAVENS

Just finished this mythologically seditious poster. If you’re not familiar with the story, it’s said that if the ravens leave the Tower of London the British Empire will fall and the monarchy will collapse. There are a minimum of 6 ravens in the Tower at all times, with one ‘spare’. In the interests of national security, their wings are clipped to keep them off balance so it’s hard for them to fly away. In the type of preposterousness that can only be found in Britain, the ravens are officially enlisted as British soldiers and can be dismissed for undisciplined conduct or desertion. In the 1980s, “Raven George”, a suspected comrade, was retired to Wales for attacking and destroying TV aerials. In 1996 two more Ravens were dismissed for “conduct unbecoming”, which if you know any soldiers, you can only imagine how bad the conduct would have to be for that to happen. Ravens are incredibly smart and likely frustrated by captivity. Two of the ravens separately figured out that they could cause havoc by playing dead, which I would like to think of as a form of protest. Over the years, some have successfully escaped, but more recently, only one raven named Munin managed to make a break for it, before being caught by an awful member of the public and returned to his prison. I’m doing some limited edition prints, available here.
BLOODY SUNDAY

Extended Bayuex Tapestry: Bloody Sunday. Bloody Sunday was a massacre on 30th January 1972 in Derry, Northern Ireland, when British soldiers from the Parachute Regiment shot 26 unarmed civilians during a civil rights protest march. 14 people died, 7 of them teenagers. Many of the victims were shot while fleeing from the soldiers, and some were shot while trying to help the wounded. Other protesters were injured by shrapnel, rubber bullets or batons, and two were run down by army vehicles. The initial tribunal into the killings was a whitewash and exonerated the soldiers of any wrongdoing, claiming the protesters had been armed. Decades later the Saville Inquiry (no relation) found the killings had been unjustified and unjustifiable. As of 2020 only one soldier (Soldier F) is to face charges for the massacre. Prints of this are available.

YEMEN

These posters I drew have started appearing on the underground thanks to Special Patrol Group. They were inspired by Jeremy Hunt talking about us sending aid to Yemen to deal with the consequences of the bombs we sold to drop on Yemen.A lot of the weapons we sold to Saudi Arabia were made by MBDA, which is a missile company co-owned by Airbus and BAE Systems. As well as the thousands killed in the US/UK backed war in Yemen, the naval blockade by Saudi Arabia is causing a famine the UN has described as the deadliest in decades, and that 8 million people are “right on the brink of famine”. The US has dispatched ships to reinforce the blockade. The Saudis rely on UK and US support for the bombing campaign, we have military personnel over there picking targets, processing intelligence, refuelling and rearming planes. The British military has also been training Saudi troops to fight in Yemen and teaching battlefield tactics to Saudi officers. The UK sending £4 million of aid is pointless while we still support and encourage the causes of that famine. We need to end our support for this war and put and end to the blockade immediately. 🇾🇪🇾🇪🇾🇪🇾🇪🇾🇪🇾🇪🇾🇪🇾🇪🇾🇪 #Subvertising #ArmsTrade #Military

GOLF CART ONE

A hardly-working Commander in Chief needs a suitable vehicle for long-range bombardment of the battlefield and the golf course. I used a 1/12 scale model of a golf cart and scratch-built all the guns from styrene and metal tubes, but the top of the nuke is from a novelty lighter.

BAYEUX ATROCITIES

Bayeux tapestry style depictions of British military atrocities. The outside of my comic ‘Join the Army‘ features a 1.5m Bayeux tapestry style version of the Iraq war, but I wanted to expand on this idea for the launch exhibition, so I made these smaller ‘tapestries’ about other UK military atrocities, (Bloody Sunday and the sinking of the Belgrano). I’m thinking about expanding the series back further, covering historical massacres committed on behalf of the empire worldwide. They’re available as prints. #BeTheMeat #Military #Empire

Been putting these up around the place. #Terrorism #Empire #Military
