GRENFELL – MUSEUM OF HOMELESSNESS

A three-dimensional poster I made as part of a series of three dioramas on display at the Museum of Homelessness show CRIMINAL, which runs until the end of October. My other work in the show can be seen below. The…
NEW TORY FLAVOUR

I’ve been meaning to update this poster for a while to include the “NEW” Tory option available to voters. Particularly in the context of the Gorton and Denton by-election, which has proven just how much Labour and much of the UK’s political and media establishment would rather see the barely-disguised fascists of Reform win political power, than allow the Greens, or any other left wing alternative succeed in driving back the rise of the far-right in the UK.
THE NATIONAL CREDIT CARD

"Any woman who understands the problems of running a home will be nearer to understanding the problems of running a country." – Margaret Thatcher Rachel Reeves explains how to run your household budget in today’s Sun. It feels like every chancellor and prime minister in living memory has presented some version of this completely inaccurate and misleading comparison between balancing a household budget and running a national economy, and its never met with the derision it deserves by the media. On the contrary it is presented as sound, logical and relatable, despite being demonstratably wrong. As Avery Edison said on Twitter, “even pretending to believe these are relevant experiences should actually be disqualifying.” Anyone in government who refers to the “national credit card” being “maxed out” should, by law, either have to resign or take a compulsory economics course. I’ve been thinking about doing a sequel to the Mini Daily Mail for a while and I think this might be the start of it. I already have the front page ready to go. "If you have maxed out your credit card, if you put off dealing with the problem, the problem gets worse.” – David Cameron
RED TORY IS A FEELING PATCH
I made some iron-on patches to update my Tory is a Feeling t-shirts to reflect the Tories currently in power. You can buy a patch by itself from my website shop but until Xmas and orders of these shirts gets one included for free. Link in bio! And to think we could have had President Sanders and Prime Minister Corbyn and yet these centrist neoliberal ghouls had to throw everything they could muster at stopping that from happening, and instead facilitated the rise of Johnson and Trump. 🥀
SO MANY FLAVOURS OF TORY TO CHOOSE FROM

Don’t forget to vote for your favourite flavour of Tory tomorrow! I’ll be voting Green in a solid Tory Red council so I’m not exactly expecting to budge the needle. But at the very least I’ll sleep soundly knowing my vote won’t be going to the Labour Right’s neoliberal, racist, war-hungry political project for the promotion of revolving-door briefcase dickheads who dream of nothing more than getting second jobs at privatised utilities firms or as advisors to gambling companies.
DEMOCRACY

I love democracy me. All those years of urgent screeching by centrists and liberals about being ‘politically homeless’ and they finally got what they wanted, the left crushed out of political life, and all three major parties offering nothing more than moderately different flavours of the exact the same thing: neoliberalism, crackdowns, more cops, fewer nurses, ongoing-austerity and constant boot-licked fealty to the worst and cruellest opinions bellowed out daily by the Mail and Sun. But this is, at the heart of it, what neoliberalism and the post-WW2 ‘Washington Consensus’ is about. Defanging democracy, removing the big questions from the public altogether. No ideology except the dominant ideology. The plebs can’t vote for the wrong thing if it’s never allowed on the ballot. That’s a big part of the reason Brexit was such a shock and why so many people voted against their own best interests because, outside of Scotland and N.Ireland, we hadn’t been offered a decision that could actually really change anything for decades. I know a few people, like my Dad, who voted Leave precisely because of that, because fuck every living prime minister who all lined up telling him to vote Remain. It’s hard not to sympathise with that sentiment. It’s also grim to think where we might end up down the line if the centrist plan to make sure that politics stays like this forever pans out. They can try and hold the gas in, but there will be burps, like Brexit, that shake the foundations of society and maybe bring the entire thing down on top of us. So thanks to politics getting back to normal you can have your Tory party with added lemon or with no added sugar, but whatever you choose, or don’t choose, you’re still getting 2 litres of carbonated […]
NOT JUST CRASHING THE ECONOMY

CW: Car crash PSA for politicians recording social media content in the back of government limousines.
MANAGED DEMOCRACY

Managed democracy, brought to you by neoliberalism. One of the primary functions of neoliberalism is to remove economic policy from the democratic sphere, so it’s no longer possible to vote for anything except neoliberal economic policy. This, now we are faced with a choice between Starmer & Sunak, is “the triumph of centrism” according to George Osborne. A triumph because all other options are defeated and removed from voter reach. Both major parties in the UK agree on the fundamentals of how to run the economy, (privatisation & outsourcing, austerity, marketisation, anti-union legislation etc.), they just disagree on some smaller points of detail such as which party’s donors should get the lucrative NHS contracts.

SERCO

Serco’s failed Test-and-Trace system costs billions and reaches just 62% of contacts, compared to UK local authorities who, despite being denied access to central government data and given just £300 million in funding have managed to reach 97% of contacts.
DOMINIC CUMMINGS

Not sure why Dominic Cummings tested his eyesight by driving 30 miles to Barnard Castle when he could have taken this simple eyesight test.

AFTERMATH

Photo: Tomas Dekeyser The election was clearly a proxy referendum on Brexit. The simple messaging of getting Brexit “done”, with the entire media establishment lined up to attack Labour and Corbyn, and years of extreme-centrist and blue-Labour wrecking actions, including the farce of the engineered antisemitism “crisis”, have led to a situation where we have an actual racist with racist policies as Prime Minister for the next 5 years. We lost because of Brexit. The left-wing policies in the Labour manifesto were, and remain, popular with voters. But the extreme centrists in Labour and the media want to pretend this was a rejection of compassionate, left-wing policies. If anything it was a rejection of Labour’s policy of a 2nd referendum on Brexit, which centrists now forget they had demanded. Ironically the same people who said Labour were unelectable because of the racism of 0.01% of its members are now advocating Labour become more racist in order to be more electable. The voters rejected Labour’s 2nd referendum at this election, they also rejected the centrism of the Liberal Democrats. Anyone arguing that a more “moderate” leader would have defeated Tory Brexit-hysteria have to explain the failure of the Lib Dems first, and the explicit swing from Labour to the Brexit party. The fact is that any Labour leader to the left of Blair would have also been monstered by the press. That they were able to demonise a kind, vegan, lifelong anti-racist campaigner as “literally Hitler” shows the power and cynicism at play against us. For the sake of the marginalised, the sick, and poverty stricken in this country, for the sake of the environment, for the sake of the thousands of innocents UK bombs obliterate overseas, we cannot allow neoliberal pro-war centrists like Jess Phillips and Tom Watson to wrestle […]

The Museum of Neoliberalism is now open! Standard opening hours are 11am – 7pm Thurs-Sun, but please book free tickets at museumofneoliberalism.com to make sure someone is here when you visit. Proper website coming in the New Year!
MUSEUM OF NEOLIBERALISM

Some photos from the Museum of Neoliberalism I co-curated with Gavin Grindon and which opened for 4 days in Brighton at The World Transformed. Now we’re raising funds to open it semi-permanently in London in November. There’s a bunch of great and awful rewards for backers on the crowdfunding page. All the objects in the photos below are actually real I’m afraid, not satire. You can see more photos of the first exhibition at www.museumofneoliberalism.com
MUSEUM OF NEOLIBERALISM

This weekend is the launch of a Museum of Neoliberalism I’ve co-curated with Gavin Grindon, at The World Transformed 2019 festival in Brighton. Tickets are still available, but if you can’t make it I’ll be posting photos next week. We also hope to show it elsewhere, including at WAR Gallery, and have been thinking about it as a starting point, and a sort of prototype for, The Thatcher Museum I was banging on about a few years ago. I’ll also be talking at the ‘Subvertising Symposium’ at The World Transformed on Sunday alongside Ad Block Bristol, Matt Bonner, Michelle Tylicki and Dog Section Press.
INESCAPABLE CHOICE

TORY LAND

Tory Land theme park adverts have started appearing on the London Underground. You don’t need a ticket, you’re already there. The ad featured in the mini Daily Mail I did with RRUNews in Liverpool. I’m doing a kickstarter to get it reprinted which you can back here: www.minidailymail.co.uk. I’ve also added a new page to the Projects section containing all my Subvertising work. #Tories #Subvertising
THE WORLD TRANSFORMED 2017

I made this installation for The World Transformed 2017, a politics and arts festival/conference held by Momentum and related groups at the same time as the Labour party conference. This year it is in Brighton and ends on Tuesday. More photos after the jump! After finishing the installation I ran into this guy in the street. I also had some of my other anti-Tory election work on display at Fabrica. This one I drew while on the Positive Propaganda artist residency. All these are still available to download from toriesout.co.uk
POSTER SALE

I have two distinct yet connected problems: I don’t have enough money to pay my studio rent next month and I have too many posters of daft drawings clogging up the same studio. If you would like a poster in exchange of some cash towards my studio rent you can have a meaty 35% discount, just use the code STUDIORENT for 35% off all posters in my shop until 8th August. Click here for the shop. If you’re extra lovely you can back me on Patreon here.
THE MOONLANDINGZ

I drew this for a poster for the excellent The Moonlandingz, a fictional band made up of members of Fat White Family and The Eccentronic Research Council who are doing a real tour. They are very good at doing it and you should go see them do it. Tickets released on Friday at 9am here. The actual poster is below, after the jump.

COALITION OF BIGOTS

After the fantastic and unexpected news from last night’s election, albeit with the end result being a Coalition of Bigots between the Tories and DUP, I think it’s about time we got started building that Anti-Thatcher Museum I was on about awhile ago.I reworked the old Tory logo into something more approrpriate and I’m taking pre-orders for screenprinted t-shirts of it in order to raise some funds to get the museum off the ground. If you’d like one they’re £15 from hereI’m going to be working on the museum with Gavin Grindon who curated the The Museum of Cruel Designs at Dismaland, Disobedient Objects at the V&A and the museum on the Israeli occupation inside the The Walled Off Hotel. It’s going to take awhile, but it’s going to be good!Onwards!

THE END OF MAY

More photos of the posters people have been putting up around London over at the Anti-Tory Propaganda page.
ANTI-TORY SUBVERTISING

Some kind souls have been printing out my anti-Tory propaganda and clandestinely installing it on tube trains around London. There are more photos and the files to print your own posters on the project page. Although I cannot condone potentially breaking any laws, I can certainly enjoy looking at photos of such behaviour. If you see any around take a photo and tag me in it (IG @spellingmistakescostlives) or send me an email.
