2024 PRESS ROUNDUP

Firstly I was very happy to be invited on the Cursed Objects podcast to talk about the Museum of Neoliberalism, I thought it went very well! Listen here. I was also on the AdFree Cities Podcast ‘Better Without Billboards‘ although I think I rambled a bit more on this one. Below are the various press links, (right-wing outlets have archive links to avoid giving them ad revenue and circumvent any paywall)

UK GOVT SAYS I’M AN “EXTREMIST”

Novara has reported that John Woodcock AKA Lord Walney, the government’s nominally “independent” advisor on political extremism, sent a dossier to the home secretary, following allegations of abuse during the general election, which included my “Vote for Genocide” poster as an example of a “concerted campaign by extremists”. You can still download the poster for free from my website here.

DAILY MAIL / UK LAWYERS FOR ISRAEL

According to the Daily Mail I’ve been reported to the British police by “UK Lawyers for Israel” for designing the BDS supermarket labels (available to download and print here). Y’know how you wait ages for one awful institution full of bastards to have a go and then three come along at once? I only just found out about this today since the Daily Mail article came out on Xmas eve. The police haven’t been in touch yet although I don’t really expect anything to come from it. This “UK Lawyers for Israel” is the same group that campaigned to have artwork made by Gazan children removed from a London hospital (see below). Which apparently they were “delighted to report”. And the same group who invited extremists from pro-illegal settler campaign group Regavim to speak in the UK. According to PSC, Regavim was cofounded by an Israeli government MP who is “notorious for homophobic remarks, describing LGBT+ Jews as “beasts”, defended violence by Jewish settlers against Palestinians and suggested that Ahed Tamimi, then a 17 year old Palestinian girl arrested for preventing an Israeli soldier illegally entering her home, should be shot in the knee caps.” Well they certainly all sound like lovely people have a firm grasp of the difference between right and wrong. This has all given me a nudge to get more labels available for download, which I’ll be doing this week! I’ll post about them in my story. I’m also now posting updates on my artwork and links in my new Telegram channel.

BMW / TOYOTA BRANDALISM CAMPAIGN

I designed this poster for a new Brandalism, Subvertisers International and XR Belgium takeover of 400 ad spaces in towns and cities across Europe targeting car advertising, polluting SUVs, and in particular Toyota and BMW. BMW and Toyota push their ‘green’ credentials in their advertising while simultaneously lobbying governments to delay and limit policies to end the sale of new fossil fuel cars. There were 11 other artists involved in the campaign including some good friends Michelle Tylicki, Hogre, Matt Bonner, and Merny. My poster was inspired by the fact that BMW was one of the car manufacturers who installed emissions test cheating devices in thousands of their vehicles, which meant they released far more toxic fumes than regulators and consumers believed. They also colluded with VW and Daimler in an “emissions cartel” to curb the use of emissions cleaning technology. More of my previous subvertising work here: www.spellingmistakescostlives.com/subvertising More images and details of the other artists works in this campaign can be found on the Brandalism website.

OVERTAKEN BY REALITY: SATIRE INSIDE A DYSTOPIA

Between the Pope auctioning off his autographed Lamborghini for charity, Lockheed Martin bidding to run NHS GP surgeries, and the FBI’s social media tributes to Martin Luther King Jr, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that satire is dead. And maybe it is. As an artist who uses satire in my work I’ve been overtaken by reality more than once, and sometimes wondered if maybe I’m not making jokes, but accidentally producing comically malevolent ideas that could actually be used by the bastards who run the place.

MUSEUM PRESS

The Museum of Neoliberalism I co-curated with Gavin Grindon has had a bit more press. I was interviewed for the above article with i-D, also Huck, New Statesman, and as mentioned previously, a great write-up in Prospect and the Financial Times, and a review in Time Out. The museum itself has been busy every weekend since we opened and the response has been fantastic. If you’d like to visit, book free tickets at museumofneoliberalism.com

NUCLEAR MUSEUM

I was quoted in this article about two of my anti-Trident posters being featured in the National Museum of the Royal Navy’s new permanent exhibition about nuclear weapons. Read it here. “Museums are an important record of the peaks and troughs of human civilisation. I hope this exhibition is housed deep enough to survive the Royal Navy’s plan to destroy civilisation entirely if Britain loses a war.” “Nuclear bombs are suicide bombs – it is impossible to use these weapons without also killing ourselves. They are an expression of a genocidal and suicidal, not to mention very expensive, form of national insanity.” Here’s the two posters that are in the collection:

PAT MILLS: THE POLITICS OF 2000AD

I was lucky enough to meet Pat Mills at Glasgow Comic Con (founder of 2000AD & writer of Charley’s War, Judge Dredd etc) and was surprised and honoured to find out he likes my work. Here he is giving a great talk recently (starts: 2:49) about the politics of comics & 2000AD and at the end gives a hearty plug for both Join the Army and the Action Man: Battlefield Casualties films which I made with director Price James, et al.

NEW FURY

The Daily Mail is FURIOUS that JEREMY CORBYN didn’t come round my house and stop me drawing this anti-army recruitment comic back in 2013, the same comic that has the full SUPPORT of VETERANS for Peace UK. Even worse, I wrote SICK TWEETS about how Corbyn is GOOD in the PAST WEEK. Scientific proof, if science were even real, that CORBYN HATES TROOPS. The Sun got hold of it too. I’ve posted a screen grab below as well as the text from the Mail article if you’d rather not give them ad revenue. Daily Mail commenters occasionally put the hatred to one side to marvel instead at the nature of time and existence.

TABLOID FURY

On Sunday I had a stall of my work at Momentum’s The World Transformed arts and politics festival at The Black-E in Liverpool. Some of my anti-army recruitment work was on display: ‘Join the Army‘ and my ‘Make Stuff Dead‘ mugs along with flyers for Action Man: Battlefield Casualties. This work is supported and endorsed by 100s of veterans, but why would the right-wing press let that get in the way of an opportunity to smear Jeremy Corbyn? My favourite part of the whole thing was Tory MP Johnny Mercer calling me a “Britain hating anarchist who knows the value for nothing” in The Sun’s online article. The story was originally posted by Guido Fawkes and picked up by the Daily Mail who went fully haywire and claimed the stall was actually at the Labour party conference. But the journamislm required to find out that wasn’t the case would have detracted from the DISGUSTED OUTRAGE. It was also strange to see the press such as The Times claim soldiers were deeply offended by my ‘Make Stuff Dead’ mugs while my twitter feed was full of soldiers asking me where they could buy one. (Here, in case you were wondering) Today Veterans for Peace UK have released a statement about the press reaction to this work. It is a powerful and eleoquent refutation of the media’s use of soldiers for political ends. You can read the full thing on their website. Here’s an excerpt: VETERANS BACK “SICK TOYS” “Let us be clear. The superb ‘Army, Be The Meat’ project and the ‘Action Man: Battlefield Casualties‘ films, which were launched 18 months ago, are nothing to do with Labour or Momentum. The credit belongs to the artist who conceived and created it and, spiritually, to the hundreds of veterans who endorsed it. ACTION MAN: BATTLEFIELD CASUALTIES ON SKY NEWS

Just uploaded this clip from last year when Action Man: Battlefield Casualties was on Sky News with Veterans for Peace UK members Kieran Devlin and Ben Griffin eloquently putting the case for why the UK should raise the age of recruitment to 18, while the Ministry of Defence fielded the former head of the army Richard Dannatt to counter our vile and unpatriotic accusations.

CHATTING

Yesterday I had a chat-moment with Gary Lactus at the SILENCE! comics podcast about whatever it is I think I’ve been doing these last few years. My chat goes a bit rambling towards the end but apart from that, this is classic chatting. Here is the chat, captured inside a chat rectangle: You can get my new comic BELOW here. #Interview

VICE INTERVIEW

I was interviewed by Karley Sciortino for VICE about my work and the effects of advertising, santa and invisible crystal energy. You can read it here. I first met the British artist Darren Cullen back in 2006, when he was handing out flyers in London for a fake holiday he’d created called Violence Week. “Fuck seeing a therapist,” he told me. “Save your feelings up for Violence Week!” Cullen’s work does a good job of continually outraging the conservative British press, who often use terms like “disturbing,” “grotesque,” and “freakish horror show” to describe his art. But they’re all clearly just right-wing stupid-heads who don’t understand that Cullen’s work is social commentary at its best, and most hilarious. While examining things like religion, advertising, and the existing moral order, his art pushes what we take for granted as being “normal” into the realm of the ridiculous. Some of Cullen’s recent creations include “Baby’s First Baby,” a pregnant baby doll complete with its own pregnant fetus; a topless Mayan calendar that counted down to the supposed 2012 apocalypse; and a “lost episode” of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos that explores the Meat Planet and its famous pork volcano. Yum? Cullen also writes for the satirical astrology column “Mystic Mark,” where he basically just highlights everything that sucks about all those power crystal, yoga planet, “vibrations” people. Oh, and he’s also shown in exhibitions alongside artists like Gilbert and George and David Shrigley, which means he’s #legit. VICE: A lot of people seem to think you’re a monster. Your “Baby’s First Baby” piece particularly pissed people off. Why do you think that is?Darren Cullen: Yeah, it’s weird. A lot of the press said the doll was disgusting because it encourages kids to have babies, and brought up the problem of teen pregnancy. But people […]

BABY’S FIRST BABY PRESS

Baby’s First Baby has been getting a lot attention recently, featured on BoingBoing, Gizmodo, The Huffington Post and Dangerous Minds. Perhaps the crowning moment however, is the story today on the Daily Mail website. I look forward to seeing what that the Mail readership make of it. It seems like the majority of commentators have misunderstood my intentions however and decided I’m making a comment on reality tv shows exploiting teen pregnancies. I’m not. It’s about the way these toys intrinsically train girls to have and care for children while they are still only children themselves. If you look in any toy catalogue the girls section is wall-to-wall babies and prams, make-up kits, kitchen sets and hoovers. We complain that children are growing up too quick, getting pregnant too early, when the only toys we give them teach kids to act like adults and prepare to have babies. It’s goes without saying that teaching young girls that these are the type of things which adult women should and do concern themselves with is also a very narrow definition of womanhood. This image in particular inspired me to make Baby’s First Baby. #Toys
